To the fans of Graphene: meet silicene...

Silicene is just one atom thick layer of silicon

Graphene is one-atom-thick planar sheets of carbon atoms packed in honeycomb-like structures. It has been of great research interest because of its unique physical properties. We already saw that papers with the term "graphine" was increasing drastically since 2006 [Link ].

Silicene is the silicon equivalent of graphene.
Because it can be integrated more easily into silicon chip production lines, newscientist.com speculates that its integration into electronic devices might help produce cheaper electronic devices.

Time Calls, once again

Today's Nepal is what was supposed to be the "new nepal" as was envisioned by the people who took bullet(s) in their chest a few years ago.   Those who survived might have a better answer to whether they took the bullet(s) for this. This is econo-political issue, which I am not much educated about, as a physicist.  It turns out that there are a lot of matters which I am not well educated about. Life is a journey where we learn. Either by doing or imitating what others did in similar instances: by following examples.

I wanted to talk about an issue that has been pointed out in a recent presentation by a Journalist (Prem Baniya). Everyone knows how corrupt the elements of the society has been through during these volatile period. Definitely, it needs a huge clean-out operation. One can wonder whether it is possible or simply blame it to the "bad politics" over the cup of the tea.  However, this time, the fingers has been pointed to the professionals; Those who were used to be set as respected examples.

The claim is that the associated professors take the paid leave on benefits, go aboard. And, do not return.
It turns out that those who took the benefits enjoy about $20-25 thousands over the five year period. Coming overseas on the paid leave is some kind of commitment that they had when they left the country.

It is the time to set an example.  As always, it is a call for Physicists. They have been good at setting examples or inspiring  generations.
The time calls once again.
Can the group of Nepali Physicists, who enjoyed the benefits and who have now decided not to go back, pay back what they have been blamed for?

If no one dares to come clean, the examples will never be set the same way.

Open Access Physical Review X (PRX)

American Physical Society (APS) has opened up for the creative commons (cc) side of it.
Recently it announced the open access journal Physical Review X (PRX) with the aim of "covering all of physics and its application to related fields".

I think by publishing in the open access journals authors have two fold benefits. One, the readers will get unrestricted access to the articles. Second, because the readers get the easy access, the author will ultimately get more readers. Plus the authors retain the copyright of the articles. The cc3.0 license permits anyone, without the need to obtain permission from the author(s) or APS, to copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt article content, provided proper attribution is given to the author(s) and to the source of the material.

Currently there is $1500 processing fee supposedly to "cover the expenses associated with peer review, composition, hosting, and archiving."

Great! you are selected for grad school, now what?

This is one of the post I am writing for the graduate students coming aboard.
First, my congratulations for being selected. Pursuing your dream in higher studies is going to be very important. It is important not only because you get into graduate school but also because it will define your career path for rest of your life.
Graduate Schools in the U.S. 2010 (Peterson's Graduate Schools in the Us)Your question is regarding whether you wanna go the the university that offered you. If you had carefully selected and applied to the universities, you will have no problem in deciding once you get the offer letter But what if two very competent universities are calling you?
I have the following recommendations (and they apply equally to cases when one is preparing to apply for grad school):

  • Visit the University website. Especially, the departmental website. 
  • Visit Each faculty website, see the trends in the department research. Are the faculty actively involved in research?
  • See if the research field particularly interests you.
  • See if you can figure out the number of graduate student to faculty ratio. 
  • If your support comes from doing the TA duties, see if you can figure out the number of undergraduate student to graduate student ratio.
  • How about the weather? Location? Socialization?
These are the basic questions that you need before you start out your venture. They are important as it will guide your next five years (plus/minus 1) and ultimately your academic life.
Once you figure out such basic academic facts, you can then go for planning the (local) life style there. The best case scenario would be if you have any close friend living nearby. If you can contact the department secretary to learn about the housing, it will also make your life much better. Craiglist listing on apartments can also be equally illuminating.

Physics Frontline: Official Blog by Americal Physical Society




The scientific publications by Americal Physical Society has been viewed as very prestigious materials by/among the scholars. Physics Frontline is the latest effort to bring out discussions on general topics aimed to public and members.

Let me quote:

Nepali Team in the International Physics Olympiad IPhO2009: Mexico

UPDATE!!!

We have been updated that Mr. Rohan Poudel (Team: Nepal) got the BRONZE MEDAL in IPhO 2009.

We would like to Congratulate Mr. Poudel and wish him all the best for future academic endeavors.


The 40th INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS OLYMPIAD, IPhO2009, will be held in Merida, Mexico from July 11 to 19th, 2009.


Nepal Physics Olympiad (NEPHO) committee was formed on the initiation of Dr. Sitaram Byahut in 2006. As one of the member of the Society, We have seen his dedication and hard work to bring it up from zero. On his co-ordination, Team Nepal participated in the 38th IPhO competitions held in Iran in July 2007 for the first time with four students. Mr. Bishal Lamichhane of St. Xavier’s College won the “HONOR MENTION” award and the President’s prize for the “Best among the New Participants”.

In 2008, in Hanoi, Vietnam, Nepal Participated with a team of 6 people.




The process of selection involves Nepal Physics Olympiad Committee conducting a national level test among students of +2 sciences, A level in science and I. Sc. It then selects, trains to represent Nepal in IPhO.

This year The test was held on 1 March 2009. It was conducted in Padma Kanya Campus, Baghbazar, Kathmandu, Pokhara and in Butwal. About 250 students appeared in the test. NePhO selected top 30 students for further training. Those students were trained for one week before a test was administered to select top five students to represent Nepalese team in the 40th IPhO 2009. Mr. Rohan Poudel, Mr. Grishma Raj Pandeya, Mr. Roshan Sharma, Mr. Shikhar Rai and Mr. Manish Pokhreal comprise the team to the IPhO-2009. The team will also have a leader – Dr. Narayan Adhikari/Prof. Dr. Pradeep Bhattarai. There are three intensive trainings, each of six days duration, for the preparation to the IPhO. The team is leaving for the IPhO to Hanoi on 9 July 2009. we would like to extend best wishes to the Nepali Olympiad Team.

There are a lot of troubles and hurdles to get Nepali team into such huge programs, moreover, Mexico is on the other side of the globe for Nepali participants. However, participation in such programs will not only bring students to the global exposure, it will also awaken a huge physics monster living in them. Challenge them and will be good for the overall development of physics and physics education in Nepal.

List of Nepali Physicists Aboard: Reloaded

I can recall this:
I was a B.Sc. Third year student at Trichandra College, doing my Electronics project with Jeevan Jyoti Nakarmi sir. He was excited to tell us that Nepali Physicists in USA had created a database of all Nepali Physicists.


Later:

I was the president of Students Association of Physics (SAP) and was told by Prof. Devendra Raj Mishra to think about preparing similar data sheet. His vision was to have a list in which one should be able to have knowledge of "who is doing what in where". That facilitates the nation to plan. PhD student are the treasures of nation.


After coming to USA, during my first year, I could not care less. I was able to find the list prepared by Dr. Jagat Shakya. But that list was discontinued. Out of that list I was able to create the list of physicists for Google Group of Nepal Physical Society.  Thankfully, google approved my request to send the mass invitation Email. Many were ignored, many were mis-typed. In anyway it has 193+ verified members with 34 active members.




Similarly, Yahoo Group Created by Sameer Dai had attempted to create a database of the members. It has never been completed. He has been requesting it for long time. Because of technical glitch it is closed to the public. I wish it could be open group.


Google Group also attempted to having such database:

but it did not go very far. Only 22 entries are there.


Another attempt was to have a facebook group:

Growing as per the facebook users grow...


Then there comes the "Nepali Physicists around the Globe": A project aimed to put the Nepali Physicists on the Google Map. Amit Dongol and I had volunteered (thanks also to Deepak Rimal and Sanjiv Jha). The effort continues...
The question is how to get in touch with the new batch of unlisted Nepali Physicists or how can they find us.

People will come and go creating lists but the authentic group will survive forever.

Nepali Physicists in APS March Meeting, 2009 @ Pittsburgh

This year marked the biggest March Meeting in the history of American Physical Society (APS).
At least 40 Nepali Physicists were present at the meeting.
Most (all ?) of the Nepali participants are the member of Nepal Physical Society.
Nepal Physical Society(NPS) is a reciprocal society of the APS.

Albert Einstein: The Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity

This evening I was wondering how our brain can comprehend this complex universe under the mathematical and philosophical way. These scientific methods involve people being able to speculate and hence learn on the basis of mistakes made by others. Thats why communication is so so important: you do not end up re-inventing the wheel!

I did some nice and extensive study of General Theory of Relativity (GTR) when I was Master's student in Tribhuvan University in Nepal. Today, after finding the Original Manuscript by Einstein on Relativity, I was equally amazed on its simplicity and compactness.
This is an awesome paper: No doubt!
In the paper, he starts from very basic formulation of the theory and justifies his theory with compelling examples. WOW!!!
Of course, you will need some background of mathematics but it is real fun.
